The Asia Pacific is the biggest category spender by region which is impelling the demand for the Titanium Dioxide industry.

Titanium Dioxide: Industry Definition and Segmentation

Scope

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is made of an inorganic chemical, titanium (IV) oxide, or titania. It comes in the bright white chemical form which is generally applied as a bright colorant in several products. Titanium dioxide also imbibes numerous lesser-recognized attributes that make it a useful and critical element in the combat against climate change and the deterrence of skin cancer. Moreover, it is an important constituent due to its ultra-white color, capability to disperse light, and endurance to ultraviolet. Since it easily passivates in oxidizing environments, where it constructs a shielding oxide coating, it delivers a high level of rust resistance on titanium surfaces. Some of the other applications of this pigment are in paint, sunscreen, and food coloring.

Category Drivers

Due to increased building activity in China, India, and Southeast Asia, which has boosted demand for paints and coatings, the Asia Pacific region holds the highest share of the market, which is expected to drive up product demand. Furthermore, the region’s growing need for lightweight automobiles is driving up demand for automotive coatings. The rise of the construction business is aided by rapid urbanisation and industrialisation, rising purchasing power parity (PPP), a high standard of living, and increased disposable income. In the area, China is the most important market for titanium dioxide.

The growing need for paints and coatings in the global building sector, which includes both residential and non-residential infrastructure, is propelling the industry forward. Architectural paints must be UV and water-resistant, whereas some specialty coatings must be chemical and corrosion resistant. It also has a photocatalyst, allowing it to self-clean and protect itself against germs, algae, fungi, and pollutants. In paints and coatings, titanium dioxide ensures improved application, a long-lasting brand-new look, a low number of applications, and easy-to-clean surfaces. This material is frequently used by paints & coatings and plastic compounders due to its favourable physical properties, boosting sales in the sector.

TiO2’s essential properties are excellent whiteness and brightness, colour retention, durability, and dispersibility. Furthermore, the pigment contains more than 80% TiO2 and is utilised in food colouring, paper and pulp, textiles, cosmetics, and other applications. Architectural paints that are both environmentally friendly and anti-corrosive are in high demand. However, the market’s expansion is projected to be hampered by issues such as unpredictable pricing and waste products generated during titanium dioxide production.

Category Management Studies

The method of production is determined on the feedstock. In addition to ores, other feedstocks include enhanced slag. The rutile crystal form of titanium dioxide pigment is produced using the sulphate and chloride processes, though the Sulfate Process can be changed to produce the anatase form. Because it is softer, anatase is used in fibre and paper applications. The Sulfate Process is a batch process, while the Chloride Process is a continuous process. In the chloride process, the ore is treated with chlorine and carbon to yield titanium tetrachloride, a volatile liquid that is purified further by distillation. TiCl4 is treated with oxygen to regenerate chlorine and produce titanium dioxide. As a source of titanium, the Sulfate Process requires the use of ilmenite concentrate (45-60 percent TiO2) or pretreatment feedstocks.

In the sulphate process, ilmenite is treated with sulfuric acid to extract iron (II) sulphate pentahydrate. The resulting synthetic rutile is treated according to the requirements of the final user, such as pigment grade or other factors. The Becher Process, which requires first oxidising the ilmenite to remove the iron component, is another method for creating synthetic rutile from ilmenite. For specialised purposes, TiO2 films are produced utilising several specialised chemistries. In sol-gel methods, titanium alkoxides, such as titanium ethoxide, are hydrolyzed: This method is particularly suited to the preparation of films. Chemical vapour deposition, which also uses molecular precursors, is a related process. When the alkoxide encounters a hot surface in this application, it volatilizes and is then destroyed.
