The global hip replacement implants market size is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.2% during the period 2024-2032. Increased demand for hip arthroplasty/replacement surgeries, an ageing global population, and a rising number of cases related to ailments and conditions such as osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and hip problems are expected to drive the market.
USA and Europe are expected to be key markets. Hip replacement surgery is a very common procedure in the USA. Over 300,000 operations are reported to be carried out in the country every year.
Hip implants are medical devices that help people with arthritis and other hip disorders or accidents regain mobility and decrease pain. Every hip implant has advantages and disadvantages. Every hip implant system has its own set of design characteristics, including size, form, material, and measurements.
Furthermore, different patients may have varying outcomes from the same hip implant system. Device design features, surgeon experience and installation technique, as well as individual patient parameters such as age, sex, weight, activity level, and overall health, can influence the outcome and life of a hip implant.

Hip replacements may be performed using a posterior approach or an anterior approach. A posterior hip replacement involves an incision at the side or back of the hip. On the other hand, in an anterior hip replacement, an incision is made at the front of the hip. The posterior approach is more commonly employed. Individuals below 50 having a normal body mass index or good overall health might be better suited to minimally-invasive surgery.
Total hip replacement is the most common hip surgery. In this procedure, artificial components replace the whole hip structure; a stem is inserted into the patient’s femur, or thighbone, for stability. The head of the femur is replaced with a ball, while the natural socket in the hip joint is replaced with an artificial cup.
In partial hip replacement, the patient’s femoral head is removed and replaced. The socket, however, is not replaced. A ceramic or metal ball is attached to the top of a stem that’s inserted into the hollow centre of the femur. This type of surgery is usually performed to repair particular types of hip fractures. Hip resurfacing is done to alleviate pain from cartilage loss.
In cases where both hips need to be replaced, a staged hip replacement may be carried out wherein one hip is replaced at a time, allowing the patient to recover from the first procedure before performing the second. However, a bilateral hip replacement (both hips are replaced at the same time) may also be performed.
Hip implant components are made of polyethylene (plastic), metal, ceramic or a combination of these materials. The various types of implants used in hip replacement surgery are given below.
Metal-on-Polyethylene (MoP): This is one of the most common types of hip implant. The ball is made of metal and the socket has a plastic lining or is made entirely of polyethylene.
Metal-on-Metal (MoM): Metal-on-metal hip devices are no longer available in the United States. As MoM hip implants could shed metal particles leading to serious health consequences, several MoM models were recalled or taken off the market.
Ceramic-on-Polyethylene (CoP): These devices pair a ceramic ball with a socket made from plastic. A polyethylene lining may be used in the natural socket instead of the plastic socket.
Ceramic-on-Ceramic (CoC): Ceramic-on-ceramic devices combine a ceramic head with a ceramic lining in the hip socket.
Ceramic-on-Metal (CoM): This is a relatively new design, with the first CoM hip device getting the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval in 2011. The ball is made of ceramic and the socket has a metal lining.
